Kibera is the largest slum community in all of Africa. Roughly the size of Central Park, this district is home to over 1 million people living in unimaginable squalor. Kibera was just one of many comparably desperate communities throughout Kenya, Uganda and South Africa we were escorted into courtesy of aid organizations such as Elizabeth Glazer, PSI or USAID. We were tasked with capturing testimonial affirmations from those who have directly benefited from strategic health initiatives targeting HIV/AIDS awareness/prevention, food protection, maternal health and malaria prevention. I was time and again struck by the overwhelming graciousness and hopeful spirits we encountered amidst incomprehensible poverty and despair. Director of Photography – Steve McGehee.
